Union Island
The Southern Boundary
Union Island marks the southern end of the Grenadines. Clifton is the major settlement and Clifton Harbor is the most common anchorage at Union. If you use the harbor, be sure to anchor or take a mooring on the northern side behind the reef. There you will find the cleanest water and the freshest breeze. If you take a mooring and pay for it, be sure to get a receipt, even if you have to provide paper and pencil. Ashore you will find a number of outdoor stalls where you can buy fresh vegetables and fruit. There are also a couple of grocery stores where you can find staples. Clifton is quite a bustling settlement. We like Port Elizabeth on Bequia better than Clifton as a place to visit, so if we go ashore, it is primarily to go shopping.
There is no beach at Clifton worthy of the name, but on the far side of the island is Chatham Bay, one of our favorite spots. Anchoring can be a little challenging if you hit rock instead of sand so be patient. Ashore you will find a lovely long beach to stretch your legs. It is possible to hike across to Clifton but be prepared for some exercise. Along the northern shore of Chatham Bay and out to the point you will find good snorkeling and some resident pelicans. There is also good fishing in the bay. Local fisherman may ask you to move if you are in their way, but usually they ply their trade toward the middle of the bay, farther out than you will want to anchor. There will be a couple of traps nearer the shore.
