St. Vincent

Principal Island of the Grenadines

When you visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines, it is likely that your cruise will start or finish on this island, home of the capital, Kingstown. Most people arriving by air take their taxi to the company base from which they are cruising or to one of the hotels along the south shore.

There is, however, plenty to do if you want to extend your visit by a day or so just to visit this largest island of the group that is about twenty-six miles in length. most of the population is centered in the southern half. You can hire a knowledgeable taxi driver to take you around some of the more interesting sights. In fact, nothing is within walking distance.

If ecology interests you, try an ecological hike into the rain forest on the western shore. If you have good luck, you may spot a rare parrot that is found only here. On the eastern side you can enjoy a drive up the Mesopotamia Valley, the agricultural heart of the island. In the same area is a very attractive botanical garden. While on the eastern side, stop at one of the black beaches, made of sand from volcanic rock.

Near the north end of St. Vincent is Soufriere, a volcanic mountain. It is possible to go part way up by car, but the hike to the summit is still challenging. On many days, Soufriere sticks its head above the clouds, and seeing the clouds around and below you can be a treat in itself.

When you make your charter reservations, get suggestions about places to stay. You will probably want to be on the south shore.
