Bequia:

You Always Feel Welcome

Bequia is the essence of Grenadines and our favorite island. Here you will find a strong native culture suffused with modern conveniences. Above all you will find friendly, proud people, happy to have you visit and eager to make your visit a success. We will touch on just a few highlights.

The best way to get a feel for this unique place is to take a leisurely three-hour taxi ride. All of the taxi drivers are proud of their home and eager to show you around. Your trip might include The Pottery at Spring, as well as a drive past the beautiful beach at Spring. You might even visit the home of Bequia’s most famous whale harpooner, Athneal Olliviere, where you will find a small whaling museum.

Try to include a trip to Old Hegg Turtle sanctuary at Industry. Brother King takes turtle eggs and hatchlings and raises them until they are large enough to have a better chance of survival. He then releases them into the sea. There is a small charge, the proceeds of which help pay for the feeding and care of the turtles.

For an architectural adventure, visit Moonhole. You will pass it as you sail south from Admiralty Bay, but, if time permits, a tour is well worth the effort. Conceived by American architect Tom Johnson, Moonhole is a series of dwellings carved out of rock, with few right angles and a truly unique flavor, not to mention spectacular views.

Bequia’s beaches offer a lovely mixture of remote and accessible. Right in Admiralty Bay you will find Tony Gibbons Beach (a.k.a. Princess Margaret Beach) as well as the beautiful beach in Lower Bay. Both are long stretches of fine sand. Getting ashore by dinghy is simple unless the bay is rolly, in which case you are likely to get damp.

Between the bays is a shallow ledge of rock and coral that can make a great practice area for fledgling snorkelers. Along the beach in Lower Bay, there are several inexpensive spots to have lunch. On weekends, the beach is alive with happy Bequians who come to socialize, play beach games, and occasionally swim.

Along the southern coast of the island is Friendship Bay with its own long, curving, sand beach.

On the Atlantic side, you can venture to Hope Beach which is usually completely deserted. Consider taking a taxi to the top of the hill behind Port Elizabeth. From there, walk a well-marked path that is just long enough to make you glad that the water awaits you. Going back, hike up the path and take a leisurely walk downhill while you get a sense of local life.

Please keep in mind that we are sharing some of our favorites places. There is plenty to see and do on your own Grenadines' adventure.
